Rule changes to play in 2009

On-court coaching will be permanently in-place at all Sony Ericsson WTA events. Sorry for all the writing
Top 10 players, based on the 2008 year-end rankings, must commit to 10 Tour events. These comprise of: the four Premier Mandatory tournaments of Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid and Beijing; any four of the five Premier $2million events of Dubai, Rome, Cincinnati, Canada and Tokyo; and any two Premier $700,000 events of Paris, Charleston, Stuttgart, Stanford and Los Angeles. However, they have the right to "opt out" of any of the Premier $700,000 events in the case that such tournament already has two other Top 10 Players entered
Top 10 players, based on the 2008 year-end rankings, who miss any commitment tournament, for whatever reason, must visit the locality of the event within 51 weeks of such withdrawal and perform promotional activities, known as "ACES" by the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, or else they will be suspended from playing the next two Premier tournaments
The rankings system has been revamped to include just 16 tournaments, down from the current system of 17. All of the above-mentioned Premier commitment tournaments must count towards a Top 10 player’s ranking, which means that if they miss one, for whatever reason, they will be assigned zero points for such event
Ranking point breakdowns for each tournament have also changed. 2,000 points will be awarded for winning Grand Slams rather than 1,000 as was the case last season. A winner of a Premier Mandatory event such as Indian Wells will be awarded 1,000 points
Toilet Breaks can only be taken at the end of a set or before a player’s own serve (regardless of the change of ends)
